11/13/14 God Is Cooler Than A Waco Winter

Can we just talk about how awesome God is for a second?  Like seriously-He is the absolute coolest.

I think it's easy to start thinking about our faith as a responsibility.  Yeah, Christianity is our religion that we follow.  That's nice and all, but isn't Christianity more than that?

So let's say you're in your apartment and you realize you're completely out of food.  It's cold outside, plus you're living on the "broke college student budget".  Imagine if someone knocked on your door, knew EXACTLY what you needed, and made your fav flavor of Ramen magically appear.  You would think that guy was awesome, right?  If this guy gave you the option of being fed for life would you accept, or would you say "nah, I'll just read an article about you later." You would OBVIOUSLY accept a lifetime supply of free food, right!?

Okay, so hopefully you agree that God's miracles are a lot more awesome than a lifetime supply of microwaveable noodles.  But in case you forgot, here are just a FEW of His miracles found in 2 Kings:
Chapter 4:

Verses 1-7 A widow and her sons are so broke that she is afraid her sons will be taken as slaves to pay off debt.  However, God turns what was a little olive oil into enough to fill enough jars for the lady to sell in order to pay off her debts!

Verses 8-37 First, a lady is very kind to Elisha, but she does not have a son and her husband is elderly.  As much as she wants a son, she doesn't believe it is possible.  But God provides!  She has a son!  A few years later, her beloved son seems to have passed away.  God wakes him up! HOW COOL IS THAT?

Verses 38-42 Okay I'll be honest, I'm not completely sure what's going on here, but it sounds like there is some bad soup and God tells a few guys to add some flour to it and the soup is fixed.  Curing a potential case of food poisoning is always good, am I right?

Verses 42-44 Here, a man brought Elisha 20 loves of bread, and Elisha commanded him to serve it to 100 people.  The man was a little confused by how that would work, but Elisha assured him that God would provide.  And that He did!  There was even some bread left over.

That is only one chapter of the Bible, and God has already done 4 incredible things.  And He used Elisha to do these things!  God can use us too, we just have to remember He is so much more than a character we read about in religion.  He is very real, and loves us a lot more than we can fathom.

While it may seem cheesy, God really is the bread of life.  John 6:35 states "Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty"."

While I am definitely going to be ready to eat breakfast in a few hours, this verse is talking about something so much more fulfilling than earthly food.  God wants us to crave Him in a way where He becomes our sole focus.  With Him, we lack nothing.

Ignored Instructions

My favorite way to feel close to God has always been by writing down things I am learning about Him as well as areas I am growing or struggling.  I haven't written in right at a year, which is an honest insight to where my faith has been over the last year.   To be honest, I have spent the better part of last year dealing with some anger towards God.  There were so many nights of begging God to answer me and not understanding why it felt like He was not helping me out in the slightest.  I prayed for Him to show me how to handle situations and for clarity on the direction that my life was going.  I wanted an audible "yes this is correct", but instead I misunderstood His "no" and confused it for silence. Truthfully looking back at myself this time last year, the best example I can give is someone angrily throwing tools across the room because they can't figure out how to build the piece of furniture... with the instructions sitting unread and ignored next to ...

Feeling Safe

I usually choose to write when life feels the hardest in order to process my own feelings and hope that it can help even one person turn to Jesus with their own struggles, and this post is no different. Life has so many waves of ups and downs, and the downs can feel suffocating. Letting go of people in our lives can be one of the deepest downs we face.  Goodbyes are a part of life for so many different reasons, but they can be so hard.  Some are needed, some are unexpected, some are confusing- but typically they are all hard.  No matter the situation, a loss threatens our sense of safety, our sense of identity, sometimes our self worth, and can have so many affects on our day to day lives, no matter the size of the loss. Sometimes through difficulties, God can seem really far away.  Not understanding why things are happening and feeling alone can lead to feeling like God isn't listening or doesn't care.  It feels like an extra betrayal on top of the pain life is...

Unexpected Path

Life is constant cycle of highs and lows.  Some days it's easy to feel on top of the world, like everything is going perfectly as planned- that sense of thriving.  Other days are hard.  They can include gut wrenching pain, the numb feeling of loneliness, or the anxiously waiting on answers that feel like they may never come. I think a lot of the pain in life comes from things not going as planned.  Whether it is a tragic unexpected loss or the dull feeling of being stuck in a season of waiting, these disruptions to what we are wanting and searching for can cause the most doubt. Jeremiah 29:11 is a verse I reference a lot-" For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."   While this verse usually brings comfort, it honestly makes me angry sometimes.  It's easy to read it and think to myself "So if You have a plan and you say it's good, why is this happening ...
